While Jon Rose was speaking on the microphone, his son smiled at the camera, closed his eyes and stuck his tongue out. The camera captured his mischievous antics and the clip instantly went viral. Rose jokingly acknowledged the situation on X (formerly Twitter), saying, “This is the punishment I get for telling my son Guy to smile on camera for his little brother.”

Despite this light-hearted moment, Rose faced criticism on social media. Some users highlighted the age difference between Rose and his wife Chelsea when they first met. One user commented, “Hey, is her mom the one you dated when you were 17 and you were 42?!? Family values are Christian, right?” Another commented, “Is her mom there, or is she busy studying for finals?”
Rose and Chelsea’s relationship has been a topic of discussion due to their age difference. Chelsea was a high school student when they met, and Rose was in her 40s. They married in 2011 when Chelsea was in her final year of college.
A look back
In 2007, 17-year-old Chelsea Doss traveled from Murfreesboro to Gatlinburg, Tennessee, for the state’s 79th annual Future Farmers of America (FFA) convention. Chelsea’s Eagleville High School FFA chapter won the State Superior Award, and Chelsea won the state job interview competition. She was named the 2007-2008 Tennessee FFA Association State President.

John Rose, then vice president of the board of Tennessee FFA, was one of the attendees at the convention. Shortly after, Chelsea received the Jerry and Betty Williams Rose Scholarship, named after Rose’s parents. Less than four years later, the couple married, according to an engagement announcement in the now-defunct local Eagleville Times. Chelsea was 21, and Rose was a 45-year-old software executive who was very active in FFA and was president of the board at Chelsea’s college.
Chelsea’s approach
In an interview with the Murfreesboro Post in 2010, Chelsea credited Rose for helping her earn the scholarship. She said, “John made everything possible for me in FFA beyond high school. Through the scholarship he provided, I didn’t have to work during college.” Chelsea said the scholarship helped her focus on FFA and school. She also said Rose coached her during her preparation, which was extremely helpful.
Political career of John Rose
John Rose entered Congress in 2018 after a successful career in business and a term as Tennessee’s agriculture commissioner. His recent speech criticizing the prosecution of Donald Trump was part of his continued efforts to support the former president. However, the unexpected antics of his son Guy brought a levity to the political proceedings and captured the public’s attention.
