Susie Cleverly, the wife of new Home Secretary James Cleverly, has been fighting bravely since her cancer diagnosis in December 2021. The couple met at university and have been together ever since, supporting each other at different stages of life, including James’ political career.

A Devastating Diagnosis
In November 2021, Susie noticed dimpling in the skin beneath her right breast. This small change led to multiple tests, which eventually led to the shocking diagnosis. Despite having eight mammograms in one day, doctors initially had difficulty detecting anything. Eventually, a scan revealed three lumps in her breast and one on her arm. Further MRI scans showed a total of 12 lumps.

Susie said hearing the word “cancer” was the most frightening. “I burst into tears and cried for most of that day,” she said. However, once she realised her diagnosis, she resolved to fight the disease.

Susie’s treatment included a mastectomy and ongoing immunotherapy to reduce the risk of recurrence. She is currently on the waiting list for reconstructive surgery. Despite the physical and emotional toll, Susie remains resolute. She has spoken openly about how this experience has taught her to understand the fragility of life and the importance of spending time with family and friends.

James Cleverly has been deeply affected by his wife’s illness. The Home Secretary admitted there were moments when he feared he might lose her. He told how difficult it was to even talk about her diagnosis. “I had to phone my private secretary at the Foreign Office to cancel a meeting because I had to go home,” he recalled. “I tried to say Susie might have cancer, but I just couldn’t speak.”
The couple’s strength and unity has been reinforced by the support of their family and friends. “There was a huge outpouring of sympathy and friendship, even from people I didn’t know particularly well. It was really touching,” James said.

James Cleverly’s political career has seen him rise from Foreign Secretary to Home Secretary. Throughout this journey, Susie has been his steadfast supporter. James admitted that if he had been offered the position of Foreign Secretary earlier this year, when Susie was undergoing chemotherapy, he would have turned it down.
The couple has become more conscious of the time they spend together. “When we are together, we are very conscious of making that time really valuable and meaningful,” James said.
