What was the cause of this tragedy?
Shiladitya Chetia was a 2009 batch Deputy Inspector General (DIG) and was serving as Home and Political Affairs Secretary in the Assam government. He was on leave for the last four months to take care of his ailing wife. Agamoni was undergoing treatment at Nemcare, a private hospital in Guwahati. Despite their efforts, he succumbed to his illness on Tuesday afternoon.

According to a police officer, the tragic incident took place in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Nemcare Hospital. “This afternoon, she succumbed to her illness. Almost immediately after the attending doctor declared her dead, she shot herself in the Intensive Care Unit where she was undergoing treatment,” the officer said. Dr Hitesh Barua, Managing Director of Nemcare Hospital, gave more details about the couple’s stay and last moments.

Dr Barua said Agamoni had been battling cancer for nearly two years and was undergoing treatment at several hospitals. For the past two months, she was under conservative treatment at Nemcare Hospital. Shiladitya had taken a separate room in the hospital to stay close to her. “In the past three days, we had told him that her condition was deteriorating. Today at 4:30 pm, the attending doctor informed him of her death. The doctor and a nurse were in the room with him, and he requested them to go out, saying he wanted to pray. About 10 minutes later, a loud sound was heard from the room,” Dr Barua said.

Shiladitya Chetia has had a distinguished career in the Assam Police. He had served as Superintendent of Police (SP) in Golaghat, Tinsukia and Sonitpur districts. Prior to his appointment as Home and Political Secretary, he was the Commandant of the 4th Assam Police Battalion. His dedication and service in the police force and the community was well recognised.

Assam Director General of Police (DGP) GP Singh expressed deep grief over the tragic incident. He said, “In an unfortunate turn of events, Shri Shiladitya Chetia IPS 2009 RR, Secretary Home and Government of Assam committed suicide this evening. The incident happened just minutes after the attending doctor announced the death of his wife, who was battling cancer for a long time. The entire Assam Police family is in deep mourning.”
