Major League Baseball announced a lifetime ban on San Diego Padres infielder Tucupita Marcano for gambling. Marcano placed 387 bets totaling more than $150,000. These bets were placed in October 2022 and between July and November last year. This is the biggest gambling scandal in decades.

Marcano, a 24-year-old Venezuelan, has played 149 Major League games. He is the first active player in a century to be banned for life for gambling. The bets were placed legally, but MLB’s rules are strict. Commissioner Rob Manfred stressed the importance of protecting the integrity of the game.

The other players were suspended for one year
Besides Marcano, four other players received one-year suspensions. Oakland Athletics pitcher Michael Kelly was suspended for betting on baseball while in the minors. Three minor leaguers were also suspended: Jay Groome of San Diego, Andrew Salfrank of Arizona and Jose Rodriguez of Philadelphia. Each had bet less than $1,000.
MLB commissioner Manfred said the ban on gambling has been a cornerstone for more than a century. He emphasized the responsibility that comes with the privilege of playing in the league.

Marcano’s 387 bets involved international games and 231 MLB-related bets. These amounted to $87,319 between October 2022 and November 2023. Twenty-five of the bets involved Pirates games while he was on their roster. Although injured, Marcano was undergoing treatment at the time of these bets.
Marcano’s bets were primarily on sports outcomes. He lost all parlay bets involving the Pirates, and won only 4.3% of his MLB bets. Despite this, MLB found no evidence of game rigging.
Padres’ reactions
New San Diego manager Mike Shildt expressed his disappointment, but emphasized Marcano’s character. Shildt said Marcano is a good person who made a mistake. He hopes this doesn’t define Marcano’s life.
The Padres acquired Marcano off waivers from Pittsburgh last November. He is recovering from a knee injury and has not played this season. Shildt and most of the current Padres players have met Marcano only during spring training.
Betting activities of other players
Michael Kelly placed ten bets on nine Major League games in October 2021. At the time, he was a minor league player for Houston’s Triple-A team. The total amount of his bets was $99.22, resulting in a win of $28.30. Oakland manager Mark Kotsay expressed hope for Kelly to return to the Major Leagues after the suspension.

Andrew Salfrank placed 29 baseball bets from September 2021 to March 2022. These included 28 bets on MLB and one on college baseball. Salfrank placed bets worth $445.87, mostly on MLB, and lost $272.64. Arizona manager Torey Lovullo saw Salfrank’s remorse and admitted his mistake.
Jose Rodriguez placed 31 bets on baseball in 2021 and 2022, totaling $749.09. His bets included seven on the Chicago White Sox while he was in their minor league system. Philadelphia manager Rob Thomson said players need to understand MLB’s gambling rules.
Jay Groom placed 32 MLB-related bets from July 2020 to July 2021. He wagered $453.74 on 30 MLB games and lost $433.54. His bets included 24 bets placed on the Boston Red Sox while he was in their minor league system.
MLB’s response and investigation
MLB was notified of the betting activity by a legitimate sports betting operator in March. New monitoring measures flagged these bets. MLB found that none of the players placed bets on games they played in, nor did they use insider information.
MLB stressed the importance of protecting the integrity of the game. An intensive investigation found no evidence of game manipulation. The Pirates acknowledged Marcano’s mistake and the importance of integrity in their statement.
